BIg City Topps GIVEAWAY

As most of you are aware, I am a lawyer. I make my living on the fine print. Whether it is reading boilerplate language in contracts that is boilerplate only until it is not or being "that guy" and reading all the documents when we closed on our house, I literally have to read the fine print.

What does that mean though?

To me, reading the fine print is something I do from time to time to see the ridiculous disclaimers that other lawyers have written. It's a professional courtesy, I suppose.

Kind of like that old joke about sharks and professional courtesy.

Anyway, I don't know how many people were interested in the topic I raised on Saturday in my "Big City Topps" post and commented solely because the topic was interesting and how many people read the fine print below the video of "Big City Nights" by the Scorpions.

For those of you who need glasses, it says, "This is also a contest post -- I'll put everyone who answers into a randomizer and send something special for your collecting interests your way to the winner."

So, yeah, forgive the poor grammar. That sentence should probably be taken outside and shot. But, I promised a contest, and a contest winner is what comes after a contest.

I had 21 comments that came from 15 different people. While some posts simply provided the blog-comment version of "Amen," others came through with very thought provoking posts. One of the more interesting comments came from Night Owl, who basically said, "well, if your team gets good enough, you'll get plenty of cards."

Actually, he said something that I took a little personally -- though not in a "you just pissed me off" personally kind of way. He said, "[t]he noisiest and spendiest collectors get the most attention because their wallet shoulds the loudest. And you know who aren't noisy or spendy? Rays and Marlins fans. And, apparently, maybe Brewers fans, according to what you're seeing from Topps." He also said that Milwaukee simply needs to be a better team for Topps to take interest

I take umbrage with those points on two levels. First, I worry that I'm too shrill sometimes ... especially on Twitter. I'll go on rants -- often influenced by Topps's selections for the Topps Now cards that I'm dying to drop my $10 a card on but which Topps pretty much says, "shut up--you don't matter" to Brewers fans. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Sooz's husband blocked me because I'm so obnoxious about that.

I can't think of any other reason why, because, for the life of me, I don't think I've ever interacted with the guy.

The other point comes from 2012. The Brewers were coming off getting to the National League Championship Series after winning the NL Central. Topps, as always, printed thousands of cards -- 95,067 to be exact. Of those, 6675 were in the "main" sets, according to Beckett. Again, a reminder that the average team should have 3.3% of the cards issued to be "equivalent." That would be about 220 cards for the average team.

And the numbers were? The AL East champion Yankees got 388 cards, the World Series runners-up Texas Rangers had 272, the nowhere near the playoffs but 2010 & 2012 World Series champ Giants had 260, the 2011 World Series champion Cardinals 259, the NL East champion Phillies 258, and the 3d place in the AL East Red Sox 257.

The NL Central Champion Brewers that year had 222 cards -- just above the 73-89 Rockies at 217 and the AL Wild Card Rays at 213. The lowest numbers? The Houston Astros -- in the midst of their dire years that led to Alex Bregman, etc. being drafted and just before their switch to the AL -- had just 108 -- 2 more cards than they had losses the previous year. The Padres had 123, and the Chicago teams were tied at 157 apiece. So, yes, being a better team helped get more cards.

And yet, those numbers still don't look right, and just because the Astros were bad doesn't mean that their fans didn't deserve cards of their team in the main sets.

I'm not saying Night Owl is wrong by any stretch of the imagination. I just think that excess -- and the cards that go with winning -- should be pushed more into inserts and less into main sets.

Oh, and one more point raised by Brett Alan (welcome, by the way!): in 1979 and according to Beckett by searching for "1979 Topps," Topps made a total of 761 cards for the entire year. Topps is credited with making 38 Yankees cards that year. They made only 26 cards for one team only (and that was the fewest overall that they made). Guess which team got only 26 cards?

Yes, it was the Milwaukee Brewers.

Okay, y'all didn't come here for more ranting or numbers -- at least I don't think so -- so here's the randomized list of the commenters. I randomized it 7 times because I like 7.

JayP -- please shoot me an email with your address so I can send something your way. I know I have it around here somewhere, but help me out and make it easy.

Thank you to everyone of you who read that post and especially to those who took the time to comment. I enjoyed reading everyone's responses and thinking about the other points that you raised.

The Card Show Contests: Congrats to Matt Stupienski & Fuji!

As you may recall, two weeks ago I put up back-to-back contests.  The first contest was for a $10 shopping spree at my local card show (by proxy, of course). To enter, people had to talk about their favorite card show purchase/find.  The second contest was for those folks who had not been to a card show to comment as to what they'd want to purchase.

Well, it turns out that most of us have been to card shows.  In fact, only one person who commented on the second contest post had ever not been to a card show -- and that person, who gets his own $10 shopping spree, is Matt Stupienski of Bubba's Bangin' Batch of Baseball Bits.

Matt -- please drop me an email with your new address and let me know if there is something specific you'd like for me to search for here in Atlanta.  To give you an idea of what I can usually find, here's a list of vendors from the last show at this link.

The other winner came through Random.org:

You have randomized this list 19 times.

I randomized the list 19 times because, well, that's Robin Yount's now-retired number. Congratulations and another $10 spree go out to Fuji of The Chronicles of Fuji.  The great thing was that Fuji's post was definitely one of my favorites posts -- and it highlighted a few awesome cards and items, such as a $10 1981 Donruss set, a $48 1982 Topps Wax box, and a 1956 Topps Jackie Robinson card.

Fuji, please check out this link as well to give me an idea of what you'd like for me to look for!

In many respects, I blew it with my answer for my favorite/best card show find.  While I definitely love the oddball Hank Aaron disc, I totally should have picked one of these two cards:

Both of these cards are in stellar condition and together cost a total of $50 from the same seller.  That Johnston Cookies Warren Spahn is one of my favorite oddballs ever, and I totally blew it when I didn't put that in over the Hank Aaron disc.

Finally, since I don't want all the great posts that were linked for the contest to go unread or missed, here are the links with a short description for each:

1.  Defgav's purchase of a Mike Schmidt Rookie Card to complete his 1973 Topps Set
2.  Andrew's best ever pack pull: a 3/5 Ken Griffey Jr. bat/patch/glove auto relic from 2014 Panini Classics
3.  The Sports Card Collectors Blog's $1 1997 Leaf Signature 8x10 autographs
4.  Dimebox Nick's purchase of a 1972 Roberto Clemente for just $5 in 2012
5.  New Blogger Jon from "A Penny Sleeve for your Thoughts" picked up a ton of great vintage at a show in Nashville
6.  Adam's great purchase of some 1955 Bowmans last September
7.  Bo at Baseball Cards Come to Life! bought an entire dime box filled with some great cards in May
8.  Commishbob's finding his first "White Whale" at a card show: the Orioles 1967 Rookies
9.  The Chop Keeper's reminiscing about his first ever card show in 1991
10.  Jim from Garvey Cey Russell Lopes and his great 1955 Topps Sandy Koufax card
11.  Brian from Highly Subjective & Completely Arbitrary couldn't pick just one card
12.  Night Owl found a 1953 Topps Pee Wee Reese in a discount box
13. P-Town Tom picked up a 1966 Topps Roberto Clemente with a lucky dice roll
14. Angus from Dawg Day Cards wanted and got a 1986 Topps Bernie Kosar
15.  Julie from A Cracked Bat talked about her favorite card show seller and Yogi Berra
16. JediJeff from 2x3 Heroes wrote about one of the coolest miscuts ever (and a couple others too!)

Thank you to everyone who entered, and congratulations to the winners!

Post #100, Part III: To the Victors Go the Spoils

Everyone has let me know what they wanted out of the Treasure Chest.  So, to milk one more post out of this contest, let me entertain you with announcing what each person has selected. With the NFL draft coming up, I decided to liven this post up by using videos of draft picks where possible.

With the first selection in the Off Hiatus giveaway draft, the Boston Celtics select:

The Celtics selected Lucas Nogueira and his Coco-Crispy afro last year in the first round of the NBA draft, and promptly traded Nogueira away to the Atlanta Hawks.  In the Treasure Chest draft, the New England-based Swing and a Popup selected:

Here's hoping that this 2014 Topps Museum Collection Signature Swatches of Felix Doubront fares better in the Northeast than Nogueira did.

With the Second Selection in the Off Hiatus giveaway draft, the Los Angeles Lakers select:

The Lakers have not picked a player in the first round since 2009, and they traded that guy away immediately after the draft for a second round pick the next season.  So, we're stuck with a second round pick from Duke, Ryan Kelly, for this selection...because I am not going near the Clippers situation right now. Or ever, for that matter.

The real upside here is that Oscar from All Trade Bait, All the Time selected a real gem of a card:

This 1978 Topps Andre Dawson card will be making its way out to California.

With the Third Selection in the Off Hiatus Giveaway, the St. Louis Rams select Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia:

While the Rams have nothing to do with the Big Apple, Keith is a big West Virginia football fan, so he gets Tavon Austin as his introduction.  And, hopefully he likes the card he selected as much as he likes Austin:

Apologies for the crappy scan, as I am in my office at work and not next to my cards to scan in the actual card Keith will be getting.

With the Fourth Selection, the Los Angeles Kings select:

What is it with Los Angeles teams getting rid of their first round picks?  I guess it's that they have to win now, so they mortgage the future for the present.  Anyway, the LA Kings did not have a first round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft last year, so they selected LW Valentin Zykov, an 18-year-old Russian who is currently playing in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

I guess it's appropriate that the person who is probably the youngest one to win something would be feted with a guy who had just turned 18 when he was drafted, so tell us, Alex from Chavez Ravining, who are you selecting?

In the end, this pick was probably easier for Alex than it was for the Kings.

With the Fifth Pick in the Off Hiatus Giveaway Draft, the New England Patriots select:

Another team that usually does not have first-round picks is the New England Patriots, but this fact is usually because they have traded down 7 times to get half the fourth round selections and two first round picks in 2021.

New reader Mark Hoyle got his second pick as well, since he wanted that Felix Doubront relic.  So, instead, he gets:

The Xander Bogaerts 2014 Topps Turkey Red. Again, apologies for the scan, but it's what I could find online right now.

With the sixth and final selection of the Off Hiatus Giveaway Draft, Baseball Card Breakdown selects:

Gavin gets the strangest video of all -- William Perry singing something -- because he has a Perry ProSet card on his Desperate Dozen list.

As was the case with the previous pick, Gavin did not get his first pick-- the Bogaerts Turkey Red -- but he does get his second selection:

The Paul Goldschmidt Topps Heritage logo variation short-print.

Thanks to all of you who participated.  I'm updating the Trade Bait list now to show those cards that have been claimed, but please contact me about a trade.  I am much more interested in trying to get cards I need than in getting "fair value," so let me know if you see something in the Trade Bait that tickles your fancy.
