In 1985, Teddy Higuera seemed to be the Brewers' answer to Fernando Valenzuela. The biggest problem for the Brewers was the fact that Teddy was 8 days shy of being exactly three years older than Fernando. Teddy was born November 9, 1957, while Fernando was born on November 1, 1960.
Milwaukee signed Higuera in late 1983 out of Juarez, Mexico. Higuera spent 1984 in the minor leagues before making his debut in late April of 1985. He ended up finished 15-8 that year and finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting behind Ozzie Guillen and one spot ahead of Ernie Riles. For what it's worth, Higuera had the better year than Guillen -- probably driven by the fact that Guillen walked 12 times in 503 plate appearances.
Higuera makes it into my PCs for his first four seasons in the league -- which happened all before he tore up his shoulder. Despite pitching only 9 seasons and topping 200 innings in just 4 seasons, Higuera won a total of 94 games for the Brewers -- good enough for third all-time at the end of the 2014 season.
And personally, I would have selected him over Mike Caldwell as the starting pitcher on the Brewers Team of the 1980s. But they didn't ask me.
