Greg Vaughn spent parts of 8 seasons on the Brewers before they traded him to the San Diego Padres in 1996 in the midst of a Padres run to the playoffs that season. I remember that well because I was in Pittsburgh for a wedding in August of that year. A group of us decided to go to a Pirates game -- plenty of good seats were available -- and Vaughn hit a long home run in that August 9 game off Dan Miceli.
Vaughn had the most home runs for any player for the Brewers in the time between the 1980s guys retiring until Geoff Jenkins emerged in the late 1990s. Vaughn was pretty good for the Brewers, making two All-Star games. With the Padres, he was a distant third in the 1998 home run race behind McGwire & Sosa, of course, when he hit 50 homers.
Was Vaughn on steroids? I don't know. Maybe so. Others say no way. I will say that he was always a large guy.
Since I collect Ryan Braun cards actively, I really don't care. I always liked the way he hit.
I have 193 Greg Vaughn cards of him in a Brewers uniform.
