Eldred was a first round pick out of the University of Iowa in 1989. He pitched in 9 seasons for Milwaukee despite undergoing Tommy John surgery in 1995. That might have been spurred on by his league lead in innings and batters faced in 1993 at the age of 25. I guess they figured that he could handle the workload.
He was a .500 pitcher in Milwaukee, and probably would have retired as a Brewer had the team not traded him and Jose Valentin in return for the skeletal remains of Jaime Navarro and a guy named John Snyder, who had a 6.68 ERA/6.09 FIP in 1999 in 129-1/3 innings. To be fair, Eldred had been horrible in 1999, so it was more of a rearranging of deck chairs on the Titanic than it was of turning something into nothing.
Anyway, Eldred ranks 8th all-time in starts as a Brewer, and he finished fourth in the Rookie of Year voting for the 1992 season.
The 1990s and early 2000s were a barren time in Milwaukee baseball -- especially after Molitor left and Yount and Gantner retired. The Brewers had only a few decent players in the 1990s, and when they got decent they got traded. Sometimes, too, they even got traded when they weren't decent.
