B.J. Surhoff was first pick overall in the 1985 June Draft out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Two years later, he was the starting catcher in the Brewers second game of the season. Not a bad way to start, since 1987 was when the Brewers started 13-0 and Juan Nieves no-hit the Baltimore Orioles in the process.
Surhoff was named the catcher for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's All Decades team of the 1990s. He spent 9 years with the Brewers as a catcher, third baseman, outfielder, designated hitter, and emergency shortstop and second baseman. He had some injuries along the way -- unsurprising with all of his position changes.
He left the Brewers after the 1995 season and joined the Baltimore Orioles. He then spent parts of three seasons with the Atlanta Braves -- a time which barely registers with me -- before going back to the Orioles for three more seasons at the end of his career.
I have 171 B.J. Surhoff cards of him with the Brewers.
