As I mentioned on Sunday, I went to my local card show this weekend. Indeed, I found a bunch of cards, as always, that I needed for my various collections.
It seems, though, that I find a ton more vintage than I ever find of more recent cards that I need. I guess that's because vintage cards sell to a wider audience than, say, a random Pacific set from 1997. Of course, I need both, so I don't mind all the vintage. But, I'd love to get those 1990s cards too.
Guess I'll have to go to a National Convention for that. Maybe next year. Or the year after.
One of my normal vendors whose table I stop at -- a guy who was at Vandy at the same time as me -- always has quarter boxes of more recent cards. I picked out a few Gary Carter cards I still needed from the early 1990s/late 1980s.
While I was digging out a few other cards to go with this (that, unfortunately, I had already), another guy walked up and started talking. Talk turned to the Topps Desert Storm set from 1991. The dealer has a fair number of cards from that set, so he brought out his box and the other guy started looking through them. He happened across a card that both of them knew I would snap up:
Teddy Higuera Desert Storm was hardly a card that I thought I would come home from that show with, but there it is. I have my doubts that I'll ever put together a complete team set -- whether having just one card from my player collections or two -- but that brings my total number of Desert Storm cards to 2, as Teddy joined Robin Yount, an eBay purchase. And Teddy was much cheaper -- $2 for it seemed like a pretty good deal to me.
I'm going to come back to this vendor later this week, because I bought a ton of vintage from him.
Right next to this table was the "15 for $1" box table. It also had a 50 cents apiece/5 for $2 box, a 25 cents apiece/6 for $1 box, and a 15 cents each box. That allowed me to fill in a few random holes in my collection:
So, I think that's my 2015 Topps Base set complete. And that Braun from 2011 finishes off the Topps base set from that year too, so it was worth the quarter I paid for it.
These four were in the 50 cent box. It didn't bother me to pay that for these four cards, either. I have to admit, though, that I never noticed how poorly painted Carlos Gomez's uniform is on this photo. I guess I should be happy that it's not the same photo as all the 2015 cards have had!
More 25 cent fun. Surprisingly, I needed this Select league leaders card (and still can use another one of them for my team set).
Finally, how about a Gary Carter "Scott Cunningham" card or a B.J. Surhoff Broder Rookies with the Cartoon back card from 1987? Again, if you'd told me that I would be coming home from this show with these cards -- priced 15 for $1 -- I'd have thought I'd had the best show ever.
To be fair, perhaps it was. But, I'll try not to drag it out too long.
Nice! Love those oddballs.
ReplyDeleteAh, the elusive 15/$1 box. Rare, but a whole lot of fun when found. Great cards!
ReplyDeleteI'm seen some decent lots of Desert Storm cards on eBay. Might be an option if you decide to get all of them.
